Let’s come along with us to the back old days through Pilotwings 64! This is an Amateur flight simulation game, which has been developed for the Nintendo 64 platform by the collaboration of Nintendo EAD, Nintendo R&D3, and Paradigm Simulation. The game was published by Nintendo in the year of 1996, and considered as the console’s debut, along with Super Mario 64. It’s a sequel of the original Pilotwings of Super Nintendo Entertainment System. Through this game, you will experience the flights as the role of the one who sits in a cabin, a true pilot.
Pilotwings 64 doesn’t really own a plot as it wholly revolves around test flights and tests to help characters get their licenses to become true pilots. Initially, before starting the game, you’ve got to pick one of six characters. However, not all of them are the same. Each person will have their own strengths and weaknesses in terms of ability or on some other states. This is also a method to help increase the diversity of gameplay while avoiding the situation in which players play only one character. The main concepts of the game that the players are about to overcome next are hang gliding, “Rocket Belt,” and gyrocopter. Each task that the game sets out will have its own evaluation criteria to rate the player. It can include time, fuel usage, damage, landing smoothness, and so on. The number of points the player receives at the same time will determine the rank of the license, including gold, silver, or bronze. The difficulty level of the tests will increase gradually as the player passes the previous tests.
In addition, this game also integrates a number of other game modes, similar to mini-games, which are typically for skydiving, a human cannonball event, and “Jumble Hopper.” “Birdman” is probably the most interesting game mode when players will seem to be cosplaying into a bird to explore the land in general and the islands in particular. From above, you can even see the busy American cities, or the Statue of Liberty, Mount Rushmore. This is because one of the four islands in the game is inspired by the United States, and is recreated as a miniature land. Unfortunately, the game only focuses on single-player mode, so you will not be able to compete with your friends in this game. However, sitting down and overcoming challenges together sounds quite fun, isn’t it?
